This 18k gold swivel ring can be worn in two ways. One side holds a glass panel enclosing a piece of braided blonde hair, encircled by a halo of cabochon-cut turquoise. The other side holds a glass panel enclosing a tiny piece of paper (10 x 10 mm!) on which the Lord's prayer was written in minute script.

This ring was likely gifted among friends, because the inside is engraved 'United by Friendship'.

Writing a Lord's Prayer in miniature is a custom that has been around since at least the 16th Century. In all honesty, it is difficult to read the prayer in full, but the start (Our Father which art in Hea - ven) can be clearly read, as can some other words of the prayer.

There are more historic jewels with a miniature Lord's Prayer known; see for instance this ring in the British Museum, which dates from the 17th Century, or this watch paper in the Victoria & Albert Museum, which dates from around the same time as this ring.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: US 8, UK Q, circumference 57 mm.
The setting has a diameter of 15 mm.
This ring cannot be resized.

Weight: 5.25 grams.

Age: Early 19th Century, also known as the Georgian era, circa 1820s.

Material: The shank is hallmarked for 18k gold; the swivel mount was stamped 'metal' by the assay office.

Condition: In antique condition with some wear and patina, consistent with age. The glass panel that holds the Lord's prayer was loose and has been refitted. The paper on which the prayer is written has some spots, which are likely water damage. There is a small resizing mark at the back of the shank.
