This 14k gold swivel ring originally likely held a little portrait at one side, and a piece of hairwork at the other. Unfortunately its original contents have been lost, but you can now fill it with your own personal memento. Its small size means you could also opt to wear it as a pendant.
In the 19th century, it was not unusual to carry around the portrait of a family member or lover. In this era before photography and telephones, carrying around a literal piece of a loved one would have had a very significant meaning.
