This egg-shaped locket is made by two oval cabochon-cut heliotrope gemstones, which are set in an 18kt setting, which is bordered by a gold link-halo.

The front is encrusted with a golden star, set with a tiny ruby cabochon.

The inside reveals a glass compartment, where you can store a picture or personal memento.

The mineral heliotrope is also often called 'bloodstone', due to the tiny red specks of hematite that freckle this dark green jasper gemstone. Heliotrope has been worn in jewellery for millennia, and through the centuries, its unique speckled appearance made man believe it had magical properties.

The Roman write Pliny the Elder (1st century) mentioned first that the magicians used it as a stone of invisibility. The ancient Greeks and Romans wore the stone to bring renown and favor, to bring endurance, and as a charm against the bite of venomous creatures.

Greek and Roman athletes favored it as a talisman for success in their games.
A few centuries later, Christians believed that the red spots came from blood falling upon the stone during the crucifixion of Jesus, as he was stabbed in the side by a Roman soldier.

This locket is currently being offered without a necklace. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to include a necklace with your purchase.
