This little seashell was converted into a vinaigrette by adding a silver pierced valve, decorated with a floral pattern, and closes with a silver lid.

A vinaigrette is a small, decorative container which was used from the late 18th century through the mid-19th century to hold an aromatic sponge soaked in vinegar or smelling salts, as a relief from nasty daily smells.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: 44 x 33 x 22 mm.

Weight: 22.95 grams.

Age: Second half of the 18th Century.

Material: acid-tested as being silver. It is hallmarked with three marks: one reading 'P.R' (likely the maker's mark), 'W4' (likely the date mark), and a small mark which is likely the town mark. Unfortunately, I was not able to identify these marks, but I suspect that this box was made somewhere in Scandinavia.

Condition: In good antique condition with minor wear, consistent with age. There is some minor damage around the hinge of the inner valve, but it still opens and closes securely.
