Before the advent of modern medicine, amulets were widely worn by men, women, and children across Europe. Everyday ailments such as fevers, cramps, and toothache could be painful and even life-threatening, while childbirth posed serious risks to both mother and child. Amulets were believed to embody supernatural powers that could promote fertility, preserve good health, and protect the wearer from harmful forces, including the so-called “evil eye.” Although the Catholic Church opposed the pagan origins of many amulets, their use remained widespread.

The colour and pattern of an amulet often determined its purpose. In southern Germany, patterned stones—particularly fossils like this example—were regarded as especially powerful protectors against witches and the evil eye.

The Alpine region provided an abundant source of these distinctive stones, and by the 18th century, amulets were produced there on an industrial scale and distributed throughout Germany. Notably, this amulet is engraved on the reverse with the symbol “IHS,” uniting Christian devotion with older folk beliefs in a single object.

Similar amulets can be found in the collection of the Victoria & Albert museum, see for instance accession numbers 930-1872 and 823-1864.

This pendant is currently offered without a necklace: feel free to reach out to discuss adding a necklace to your purchase.
