This small 18k gold ring is shaped like a so-called ouroboros, set with two tiny rose-cut diamonds in silver settings for the eyes. The design of its head, almost reminiscent of a little dolphin, is typical for jewels of the early 19th Century.
The Ouroboros symbol, representing a snake biting its tail, has been known for millennia and was first used in ancient Chinese mythology. Similar symbolism is also found in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece, where it symbolized the circle of life, death, and rebirth. Through the centuries, the symbol has kept its significance in Western iconography.
