This 14k gold oval locket pendant is made up of two glass panels that reveal the contents from both sides. One side displays a hairwork depicting an urn on a plinth under a wheeping willow, all three widely used symbols of mourning. The other side displays a hairwork of a monogram crowned by a laurel wreath, which I believe reads 'AJS'.
In the 19th century, before the invention of photography and telephones, carrying around a literal piece of a loved one had a very significant meaning. Therefore, jewels that contained a piece of hair, especially from a deceased loved one, became very popular.
A lot of jewelers specialized in creating designs from hair, and popular ladies' magazines even gave descriptions on how these works of art could be created at home.
This pendant is currently being offered without a necklace: feel free to reach out if you would like to include one with your purchase.
