The absolute star of this 14k gold, curb link lavalier necklace is the old mine-cut diamond that dangles at the bottom. This diamond was likely taken from a much older jewel, since its cut likely originates from the early 18th Century, while the necklace was created in the early 20th Century. There is also a chip on top of the girdle which points to it being removed at some point, which was cleverly hidden under a prong.
The unevently cushion-shaped diamond measures has an approximate weight of 1.15 carats, with a slightly warm (J-K) colour and good clarity (VS).
The term ‘lavalier necklace’ comes from the Duchesse de la Vallière, a mistress of King Louis XIV of France (1754-1793), who famously wore this style and created a craze for this design in the late 18th Century. They are characterized by a pendant or drop that is the central part of the necklace, rather than forming a separate part of the necklace.
