This stunning ring from the Art Deco period is centered by a cabochon-cut light blue sapphire, with an estimated weight of 5.25 carats. The cabochon is shaped in a relatively high-domed, which was done to optimize its asterism effect.
This asterism effect, also known as the star effect, is an optical phenomenon caused by light reflecting off tiny parallel, needle-like inclusions within the sapphire's crystalline structure. When light hits the sapphire, these inclusions focus the reflected light into a distinctive, shimmering star shape that appears to float across the gem's surface.
As is typical for this period, the ring shank is made from two materials: the open-worked setting of the sapphire was created in platinum, and the ring shank itself is made from 18k white gold. The shoulders of the shank are set with three rows of round antique-cut diamonds, which have been placed in open settings, allowing light to pass through them.
