The witch's heart, which can be recognized by its point that turns slightly to the right, has been used since Medieval times as a symbol of protection. Brooches in this shape, often made from inexpensive metals, would be worn as a lucky charm to ward off bad spirits.
This particular example was made in the early 20th Century and is studded with several rose-cut diamonds in open, silver settings. Its pierced gallery helps extra light pass through the gemstones.
