This 18k gold ring is set with six table-cut diamonds, four of which form a cross. All diamonds are set in closed, silver settings, as was traditionally done to enhance their colour and brilliance. The back of the setting has been decorated with a ray pattern, typical of the era. The shoulders are decorated with scrollwork. After the shoulders, the shank has been replaced, likely because the original shank was worn with age.
The table-cut diamond, considered the first true diamond cut, was developed in the 15th Century, emerging from the earlier point-cut. It was designed by polishing down the top and bottom of a natural octahedral diamond crystal to create a flat, square table.
