This collectable 'Billet Doux' (which translates to 'sweet notes) etui was used to tuck a little love letter inside, which would be passed along through a courier.
It is made from laquered wood, and the exterior is decorated on the top and bottom with two pairs of playing children. In the top picture, the children are playing with the bird tied to a string, while in the bottom image, the bird appears to be untied, and the boy triumphantly plays on a drum.
