These 14k yellow gold star-shaped earrings are set with rose-cut pink garnets, which are known as Perpignan Garnets. I suspect that they were originally part of a larger jewel, and were converted into practical earstuds at a later point in time.

Perpignan garnets are named after a large city in the south of France, in the Catalan region, close to the Spanish border. Perpignan garnets are not only known for their beautiful colour but also for the way they were faceted and set in the jewels of the area. Typical for Perpignan garnets is that they were faceted and set like rose-cut diamonds, with a domed, faceted top, and flat back. Perpignan garnets, also like rose-cut diamonds, were always placed in a closed setting with a piece of foil behind the stone, which would optimize their colour.
