This rare platinum and 18k gold 'Order of the Thistle' is studded with numerous rose-cut diamonds. The center is decorated with a thistle on a green enamel background, together with the motto 'Nemo me impune lacessit', Latin for: 'No one harms me with impunity'. I found the brooch in a purple velvet box, which I believe to be original and will be part of this sale.

The Order of the Thistle is Scotland’s highest and most prestigious order of chivalry, and the second-highest in the United Kingdom, ranking just behind the Order of the Garter. It recognizes notable public service and significant contributions to national life. The order is ancient, with historical ties dating as far back as the 8th century, though its modern iteration was established by King James VII of Scotland (James II of England) in 1687.

The order consists of the Sovereign (the monarch) and up to 16 full members (Knights or Ladies). Members of the Royal family and foreign monarchs can be added as "extra" or supernumerary members.

Unlike most UK orders, appointments to the Order of the Thistle are entirely at the personal gift of the monarch and do not require government advice.
